Yes, I know it's been awhile since this game has come out. I never said I would only talk about brand new games (but trust me, I will be talking about more).
I've heard a lot about this game, mostly on shows like Reviews on the Run or Electric Playground. I've also watched my friends play it. Today, I had the chance to try it out for myself.
My friend Nathan and I rented this game along with Dynasty Warrios: Strikeforce, which I will also be talking about in the near future (but not at length). I didn't get very far in the game. I had maybe 30 minutes or so to give it a test run.
I am rather partial to the cel-shaded graphics, which I don't remember seeing in any game since Dragon Quest VIII. It's less realistic perhaps, but in some ways more appealing. It's like watching anime in 3D. It gives the game a rather unique atmosphere and feel.
The little robot that leads you around early game is a tad annoying. Not a terrible character, just irritating if you have the proclivity to explore and do your own thing like me.
The gameplay is fun and smooth. I like the fact that you gain experience as you go even though it's basically a FPS. It's not exactly a new idea; the Elder Scrolls series has certainly gone this direction. I'm not sure how this affects gameplay long term but the idea does appeal.
If I'm allowed to recommend this game on a first play basis, I think I would. It's a cool game that hooks you early and probably wouldn't let go for hours to come.
