I have another confession to make: If it wasn't bad enough that I'd never played Chrono Trigger until last year (2010), I haven't played many Sega Genesis games either. There have been a few Genesis games popping up on Steam recently, so I thought I would give that a try. Add to the fact that they are incredibly cheap; many of them are considered classics in their own right.
I vaguely remember playing Golden Axe in the arcade, but I don't think I've ever played it in longer sittings. I decided to give it another go and see what all the fuss was about.
GA is essentially a side-scrolling beat 'em up style game like Final Fight, Ninja Turtles, or Double Dragon. I will certainly admit to having a weak bone for this genre of games.
After playing it for awhile, I felt that the control scheme was a little awkward, but that could be due in part to the fact that I don't have a game controller in the style of a Genesis controller. If I can get that kink worked out, I think it would be a pretty fun game to play.
I suppose what makes the game unique is the ability to mount different creatures. It's not something you saw a lot in other games in the same genre around that time.
