4. Virtual Boy
Yeah, I still remember when this atrocity came out. At the time, we (my friends and I) were excited about the Virtual Boy and we thought it might be the next big thing. Of course, it wasn’t. Any console that can hurt your eyes and make you feel sick at the same time (the two might be connected) wasn’t bound for widespread adoption. Moreover, games just weren’t headed in the monochromatic direction (give us our color back, please?).
I think we were probably excited because the commercials made it look cool, but also because it was something new. In the early days, it wasn’t entirely clear that video game technology would continue to evolve and grow and companies would release new and better systems, so when the new systems started emerging, it was fun to consider the possibilities.
