Ah yes, the GameCube. Wait, what? Nintendo released a console in between the Nintendo 64 and the Wii?
Yes, that’s right, the GameCube was a pretty forgettable cube (the Companion Cube has more notoriety, yes?). Having forsaken the trend towards discs with the N64, Nintendo was a little late to the game with this console. The game titles accompanying the release of the GameCube weren’t terribly strong either, but holy cow it was also competing with the otherwise sublime PlayStation and the PlayStation 2 systems, which were not only offering superior gaming experiences, they could also be used as DVD players. That may be a given these days, but being able to use your gaming console as a DVD player was kind of a big deal back then (thus Sony’s misguided efforts to make the PlayStation 3 Blu-ray compatible). They kind of missed the boat on this one.
