In the aftermath of personal loss and creative upheaval, David Andrew Wiebe found himself at a crossroads in 2004. His band, Lightly Toasted Touché, had just disbanded, leaving him with a crucial decision: abandon his musical aspirations or forge ahead into unknown waters. With merely three years of guitar experience under his belt, Wiebe chose the path of persistence, embarking on a solo journey that would culminate in his debut album, Shipwrecked… My Sentiments – a record that would later become the first release on Arctic Sunburn Records.
Born from Adversity
The album’s creation emerged from a period of profound transition and loss. Beyond the dissolution of his band, Wiebe was grappling with a tumultuous relationship with his songwriting partner and the weight of personal tragedy. The death of his cousin Mitch during the recording process added another layer of emotional depth to an already introspective project. These experiences, combined with the lingering impact of losing his father in his teenage years, created the perfect storm for a deeply personal artistic statement.
“Following the breakup of the band, the tumultuous relationship with my songwriting partner, and the death of my cousin, it was an expression of how I felt in that moment,” Wiebe reflects. “Lost, trying to figure out adulthood on my own, away from my family… I lacked confidence and any sense of belief in myself.”
A New Musical Direction
The album marked a significant departure from Wiebe’s previous work with Lightly Toasted Touché. While his former band specialized in jam-based rock and punk fusion, Shipwrecked… My Sentiments saw him exploring new territory through folk-rock arrangements centered around the steel-string acoustic guitar. This shift in instrumentation opened up new possibilities for songwriting and arrangement.
This is Lightly Toasted Touché’s first and only EP:
The album’s sound draws from an eclectic array of influences, creating a unique tapestry that weaves together elements from artists as diverse as Eric Clapton, Extreme, Collective Soul, and Jimi Hendrix. The Calgary singer-songwriter scene also left its mark on the record’s intimate, confessional style.
The Home Studio Chronicles
The album took shape in a basement studio known as Red Flame Records, a space that evolved alongside the recording process. Wiebe’s business partner, Adam Burwash, proved instrumental to the project, serving as both drummer and producer. The intimate recording environment allowed for experimentation and collaboration, with additional contributors adding violin and backing vocals to enhance the arrangements.
Songs of Loss and Revelation
The album’s track listing reads like a diary of personal revelation and emotional processing. “Six Sides” explores the complexity of giving second chances to those who have disappointed us, while “Not By a Long Shot” grapples with the challenge of living up to seemingly impossible ideals. Perhaps most poignantly, “Pin the Tail” serves as a bittersweet farewell to former bandmates while acknowledging the uncertainty of the path ahead.
These themes are reflected in the album’s carefully chosen title. “‘Shipwrecked‘ came after exploring many synonyms,” Wiebe explains with a hint of irony. “It captured that feeling of being lost, searching for direction in the midst of personal upheaval.”
Release and Reception
On September 8, 2006, Shipwrecked… My Sentiments made its debut at Karouzos Steakhouse in Calgary, with an intimate gathering of 30-40 supporters, including family, friends, and church members. While initial distribution was limited to live performances, the album found wider release through CD Baby in 2007, benefiting from promotion tips shared by the platform’s founder, Derek Sivers.

The album garnered positive attention from critics and fellow musicians alike. Radio promoter Ron Ingalla praised Wiebe’s “great song-writing skills, great vocal tonality, and a tight sound on acoustic, electric, and bass guitar,” drawing comparisons to Pearl Jam, Green Day, and Eric Clapton. The album received airplay on Lethbridge’s university station and in Calgary coffeehouses, accumulating over 4,400 documented streams across various platforms.
Legacy and Future Echoes
Looking back at Shipwrecked… My Sentiments from his current perspective as the founder of Arctic Sunburn Records, Wiebe views the album with a mixture of critique and appreciation. He acknowledges technical imperfections – occasional timing issues in the drums, moments of pitch uncertainty in the vocals, guitar solos that reflected his relative inexperience with the instrument. Yet, he recognizes something valuable in the album’s raw energy.
“There is a youthful energy to the album, and this energy can be heard and felt on my future releases as well,” Wiebe notes. “It’s a kind of hunger… the desire for recognition and something greater.”
While the songs from Shipwrecked… rarely appear in his current setlists, they haven’t been forgotten. In recent years, Wiebe performed a special show featuring updated versions of the entire album, and the songs occasionally resurface in jam sessions with fellow musicians. More intriguingly, these early works may find new life in a future project called Burn The Ships, which plans to combine material from Shipwrecked… with another early album, Fire Your God.
Shipwrecked… My Sentiments stands as more than just a debut album or Arctic Sunburn Records’ first release. It represents a pivotal moment of transformation – when a young musician chose to navigate through personal storms rather than abandon ship. The album’s imperfections and raw emotion capture something honest about the human experience of loss, growth, and perseverance. In choosing to document these struggles through music, Wiebe not only began his journey as a solo artist but laid the foundation for what would become a broader musical legacy.
